Does Tutoring Actually Work? Here’s What the Research Says

Tutoring is one of the most well-studied interventions in education — and the evidence is unusually strong. A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis by researchers at the University of Toronto and Northwestern University, published through the National Bureau of Economic Research, found that tutoring programs produced consistent, substantial gains in student learning across nearly every study design tested. A follow-up peer-reviewed version published in the American Educational Research Journal confirmed the effect held up under stricter statistical review.

A separate research brief from EdResearch for Action found that, on average, tutoring accelerates a student’s learning by roughly three to fifteen months of additional academic progress, and that consistent tutoring is one of the few school-based interventions with demonstrated large effects on both reading and math achievement.

A separate three-level meta-analysis published in Contemporary Educational Psychology, reviewing 22 experimental studies across nearly 7,000 students, found private tutoring produced meaningful gains in academic achievement across grades 1–12. Effects were strongest for younger students and when sessions were consistent and focused — exactly the model our tutoring is built around.
