How to Read This NWEA Math Score Chart

Find your child’s testing season tab above, then locate their grade column. Read down the percentile column on the left until you find the RIT score that matches or is closest to your child’s score — the percentile on that row is their national standing among all students who took the NWEA MAP Math test in the same season and grade. The 50th percentile row (highlighted in dark green) is the national average for each grade. Scores above that row are above the national average; scores below it are below. These math map test scores are drawn directly from the 2025 NWEA norms study and apply to the 2026 and 2027 school years.

The heat map colouring makes it quick to assess a score at a glance: pale green cells in the lower rows represent below-average performance, mid-greens indicate average to above-average performance, and deep greens indicate top-percentile achievement. No other NWEA MAP math scores by grade level chart shows every single percentile from 1st to 99th — most show only five or six data points. Every cell in these tables represents a real RIT score at which exactly that percentage of students nationally performed at or below in the 2025 NWEA norms study.

NWEA MAP Math Scores: Frequently Asked Questions

What are NWEA MAP Math scores by grade level for 2026 and 2027?

NWEA MAP Math scores by grade level for 2026 and 2027 use the 2025 NWEA norms, which are the most recently published national averages and the current official benchmark for MAP Growth assessments in both school years. The nwea math score chart at the top of this page shows all 99 percentiles for every grade from Kindergarten through Grade 12 across Fall, Winter, and Spring, making it the most complete reference for 2026–2027 math map test scores available online.

How many questions are on the NWEA MAP Math test?

The NWEA MAP Math test contains approximately 40 to 43 questions for most students, though the exact number varies because the test is adaptive — it adjusts question count and difficulty based on each student’s answers in real time. The adaptive design is why math map test scores accurately reflect each student’s individual achievement level rather than measuring how many questions they happened to complete. Most students finish the NWEA MAP Math test within a single class period of 45 to 60 minutes.

What is the highest NWEA MAP score in math?

There is no fixed ceiling on the NWEA MAP Math RIT scale, but in practice the highest NWEA MAP Math scores fall between 265 and 285 RIT even for exceptional high school students. Based on 2025 NWEA norms, the 99th percentile for Grade 12 Math in Spring is 285 RIT, visible in the Spring table above. Scores above 270 are extremely rare and represent performance well beyond standard grade-level curriculum for any grade.

How long does the NWEA MAP Math test take?

The NWEA MAP Math test typically takes between 45 and 60 minutes for most students, with no hard time limit so students can work at their own pace throughout the assessment. Because the test is adaptive, some students finish in around 35 minutes while others take longer depending on how many challenging questions the algorithm generates. Schools generally schedule the math MAP test in a single class period, and the vast majority of students complete it without running out of time.

What does the NWEA MAP Math test measure?

The NWEA MAP Math test measures student achievement across Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations, Measurement and Data, and Geometry at elementary grades, expanding at higher levels to include Ratios, Functions, Statistics, and advanced algebra. The test is aligned to Common Core State Standards and uses the same continuous RIT scale from Kindergarten through Grade 12, which is what makes the nwea map math scores by grade level chart above meaningful as a cross-grade comparison tool.

How often do students take the NWEA MAP Math test?

Most schools administer the NWEA MAP Math test two to three times per year — typically in Fall, Winter, and Spring — though some districts test only in Fall and Spring. The multiple testing windows are why the nwea math score chart above provides separate Fall, Winter, and Spring tables: comparing a score to the correct seasonal norms is essential for an accurate picture of where a student stands nationally. Growth between testing windows is as informative as the absolute score level.

What is a RIT score on the NWEA MAP Math test?

A RIT score on the NWEA MAP Math test is a number on the Rasch Unit scale representing a student’s current math achievement level, independent of grade. RIT scores range from around 100 in early Kindergarten to over 250 for advanced high school students, and the same scale applies across all grades — meaning a 3rd grader and a 6th grader who both score 200 are at the same math achievement level. Every cell in the math map test scores chart above is a RIT score corresponding to a specific percentile, grade, and season.

What is the difference between Fall, Winter, and Spring NWEA MAP Math scores?

NWEA MAP Math scores are highest in Spring because students gain knowledge across the school year — a typical student gains 8 to 17 RIT points from Fall to Spring, with the largest gains in Kindergarten through Grade 3. This is why this nwea math score chart shows separate tables for Fall, Winter, and Spring: comparing a child’s Fall score to Spring norms would make them appear below average even if they are right on track. Always match the test date to the correct seasonal table when reading the nwea map math scores by grade level data.

How do I find my child’s exact percentile rank from this chart?

To find the exact national percentile for any NWEA MAP Math RIT score, use the free NWEA MAP score calculator for an instant result. To use this chart manually, select the correct season table, find your child’s grade column, then scroll the percentile rows until you find the row where the RIT score matches or is closest to your child’s score — the number in the leftmost column is the percentile rank. The 50th percentile row (dark green) is the national average and the most useful reference point.

Why do NWEA MAP Math scores grow more slowly in high school than elementary school?

NWEA MAP Math scores grow more slowly in high school because students diverge into different math courses — Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus — rather than following a single curriculum, and the math map test scores reflect the average across all those tracks. In elementary school every student follows the same grade-level math sequence, producing more consistent and measurable RIT growth each year. The nwea map math scores by grade level chart above shows this clearly: gains of 15+ RIT points per year in early grades narrow to 2–5 points per year in Grades 9–12.
